Outfits: Scholarly Safari

SHIP'S LOG: Their favourite holiday of the year, Halloween, is coming soon, so A and B are busy getting their costumes ready. A shows off her new penny loafers and invites you to check out our sponsor CSNstores and their neat-o bedroom furniture sets.

As soon as I finished my CONSTI exam and slept for fifteen hours straight, I dragged my aunt and uncle and the Cat to a warehouse by Manila Bay where Citibank was hosting a huge brand sale. It was mind boggling to see ladies grabbing clothes left and right while their husbands or boyfriends looked frantically trapped as they held at least half a dozen plastic bags filled with shopping, but retail therapy is always fun. I bought two pairs of shoes and stopped my auntie from buying a pair of Tod's that were beautiful but also too big for her. Success!

I was torn between these lovely penny loafers and an equally lovely pair of riding boots. Though I did very much want the boots so I could pretend to be an archaeologist/adventurer like the O'Connells from The Mummy, practicality won out and I got the penny loafers, which I can wear to school and with dresses. The buy certainly made up for my losing out on the Zara moccassins a few weeks back.

B and I were at the ossuary where her grandparents are interred. We were planning to shoot creepy black and white ghostly photos but were foiled by the heavy construction going on in preparation for All Saints' Day. Still, B thought these test shots were nice enough to show off and very safari, so I suppose my desire to be an archaeologist/adventurer can be fulfilled sans boots after all. All I need now is a pith helmet! Anyone have an idea where I can get one?

Merry Manila Meriendas: The Peninsula Lobby

SHIP'S LOG: A and B celebrate the end of the semester with a posh, very bongga afternoon tea at the Manila Peninsula, which also marks the beginning of a new A Plus B in the Sea-ries—Merry Manila Meriendas.

Manila Peninsula

When I was in preschool my grandmother would reward very good behaviour with tea at Manila Peninsula's Gallery, a sofa-filled balcony with gigantic floor-to-ceiling windows. I remember hot crumpets and violin quartets on a lazy, sunny afternoon. My three-year old self absolutely loved it, and to this day I'm stuck with what my uncle calls the 'Champagne taste, beer budget' dilemma.

So, after a really bad and equally long semester in law school, I decided to take out the piggy bank and splurge on a fancy afternoon tea buffet at the Peninsula's lobby (unfortunately, they closed non-guest access to the Gallery, which I could see was still draped in sunshine and dust motes). B and I discovered an obsessive predilection for scones last summer, but now I think we'll be glad never to see a raisin scone again, so stuffed were we with scones and cheese and fruit and savoury tarts and gallons of tea.

We walked into the gilt and ivory columned and carpeted lobby at a quarter past two and were promptly seated next to the buffet. I could see the tiers of sandwiches and pastries, but the maitre d'hotel told us we couldn't start until two-thirty. Ah, delayed gratification . . .

He did get us our personal tea pots though. I chose darjeeling while Bea picked a lovely Japanese green tea. We oohed and aahed over the silver tea strainers and the cheerfully patterned china.

B and I hadn't seen each other for a month, so we were chattering like magpies until the maitre d'hotel gently reminded us that they were ready to serve us the lamb and celery pita pinwheels and chocolate and almond pudding. With that, we began a two-hour foray into lemon curd topped scones, goat cheese crackers, freshly made ice cream, chocolate chip cookies, and mushroom and cheddar tartlets.

The cheese selection was fantastic, and B in particular kept going back for more and more and more. I myself was partial to the gigantic scones with dollops of 'Devonshire' cream (nothing like the real thing, but all right under lemon curd and strawberry jam).

After awhile we threw in the towel and decided to take a brisk walk in the hope of burning some carbs to make way for more! We listened to the piano player on the second floor play a couple of old-but-good show tunes, while we tried to find a staircase up to the Gallery (but we never did, stupid hotel rules).

Then we went back down for seconds (or is it fifths?) in the form of Rocky Road and strawberry ice cream over steaming chocolate sponge pudding.

Manila Peninsula

It was a lovely afternoon, and I was so glad to spend time with B in order to work out ideas for new photo shoots and A Plus B in the Sea features. We have a lot of interesting things in store, which we hope will make up for the lack of posts in October. Brainstorming + sugar cubes in tea = numnumnum yumminess!

Though a merienda at the Manila Peninsula is way outside the usual student budget, it's worth a visit if only for the people-watching that you can do. We saw a tall, dignified old lady in a neon green knitted coat over a white Grecian smock with gold bangles and pearls draping from every limb. If only we had the guts to ask for her photograph! She was accompanied by a doughty middle-aged man who accosted the waiter and told him all about his life, starting from his own experience waiting tables in high school and ending with enough cash for lunch at the Peninsula everyday.

B managed the shot of another Filipina dowager using the tried and true technique of pretending to take a picture of me, while directing the camera to a person in the background (though generally this trick is used by high school girls snapping shots of their crushes). I love the lady's shades and her powder blue plaid suit!

Eventually B and I couldn't manage another bite for all the tea in China. I was fair bursting with darjeeling and custard tarts. Lesson learned: don't wear a mod shift dress to a buffet, it gets difficult to breathe after an hour or two. So we asked for the bill (adios, dinero!) and smuggled a sugar loaf worth of sugar cubes in my boater hat. Heavenly merienda, it made up for a horrible month of swotting.

Manila Peninsula

Afternoon tea at Manila Peninsula's Lobby is held from 1430 to 1730 everyday. It costs USD 15.50/GBP 10.00/PhP 700.00 for the buffet and USD 8.00/GBP 5.00/PhP 350.00 for a cream tea. No reservations needed.

A wears thrifted pink polka dot shift dress, Zara pumps borrowed from B, black bow necklace, boater hat from Sock & Sole Co., and a Zara sweater borrowed from mother's closet. B wears a thrifted floral sundress, tan clogs from Sportsgirl, and a gold locket.

Outfits: Lulu Letty Love

SHIP'S LOG: B receives a surprise package in the mail and heads to a meditation area for a peaceful photo shoot.

Lulu Letty

I can honestly say that if I never win another giveaway again, I will die happy knowing that I at least won Maria's. Maria is a huge inspiration to me- so amazingly creative not to mention incredibly sweet. She has such a distinct style all her own. There are always preppy and outdoorsy (that's a word, right?) elements to her outfits and this has influenced my own style greatly.

Lulu Letty

Since Arianne is still swamped with law school, the ol' tripod and I have been spending a lot of time together. For this shoot, we went to a meditation area in the Ultra sports complex.

I've been doing a lot of afternoon running at Ultra's oval lately. It's seriously one of my favorite spots in the city. I usually head over there around 2 in the afternoon when it is least busy-thus dodging the after school/ work crowds. It's my thinking time and the breezy, drizzly weather has been so pleasant for it.

Lulu Letty

It's a relaxing routine of running a couple of laps, sprinting occasionally then sitting high up on the bleachers to watch all of the awesome athletes below. I love watching the soccer teams, track and field runners and pole vaulters all gathered in one area bustling with energy and activity!

I thought I'd also debut the sandals my mom brought back for me from Australia (where my sister lives). It's about time I replaced my old ones and these are so sturdy and comfortable it's unreal. I hope I'm not the only person who has one foot wider than the other! It made me extra appreciative for the adjustable straps down the front. Best.detail.ever.

Lulu Letty

I thought I'd also share with you guys the big box the wreath came in and the thoughtful card that Maria included in it. The card has an adorable anchor on the back too. I can't wait to use this wreath even more in future posts. Thank you so much, Maria!

Outfits: Floral Fort

SHIP'S LOG: You know how people turn to comfort food when they're feeling low? B turns to comfort clothes. Well, comfort food too (squash soup) but sometimes you just need a fluffy hug from your comfiest jacket.

Flower Fort

Feeling like I hadn't done enough blog work these past few days, I set out for this cool military fort. It was a crazy little adventure because some military women were having target practice nearby! I was so nervous they would either use me for game or yell at me to leave. Thankfully, neither happened. They did their shooting, I did my shooting and nobody got hurt.

Flower Fort

Anyway It's just one of those weeks where the things I'm thinking about make blogging feel insignificant. I don't seem to have the energy to comment much but please don't think that I'm not reading all of your wonderful posts. I know I don't have to apologize because I feel like so many bloggers go through this once in awhile. You guys understand.

Even when I'm feeling under the weather I like to keep my look light. Maybe in the hopes that it will rub off on me somehow. Colder weather is starting to roll into Manila - drizzly days with a dash of sunlight. At night I can even smell a hint of Christmas in the air. Which can be nice and frankly a little scary. I feel like time is flying so fast -and those darn malls playing Christmas carols already are not helping at all.

Flower Fort

To try and cheer up (and because sometimes it helps me think) I went thrifting alone. I was hunting for an army jacket (so trendy but hey, I'm only human) but found this little quilted cloud instead. I love that it's so clean and fresh looking.

The only thing that bugs me is that there is a zipper at the collar -indicating that there actually should be a hood. That would have been too good to be true though.

Flower Fort

The tan wallet is a gift from my Dad. I'd been lamenting my lack of a 'grown up' wallet to him. Seriously, you guys should see the sorry excuses for a wallet I've been carrying around. I'm sure my friends have been embarrassed enough. One was a blue crocodile and the other was a pink popsicle -both with zip mouth openings. But I'm incredibly picky and only the least fussy wallet would do.

Flower Fort

I am also very much NOT a big-bag girl. I've tried but I can't seem to fill them up (what do you big-bag girls put in there?) and feel like they would weigh me down. I move around too much! So I was extra pleased that this wallet fit my iPod shuffle, glasses and phone. No need for a bag and a legitimate case for my money. Win-win!

Flower Fort

Lastly, a photo with my eyes actually open! I realized how funny I look staring at the grass in all these photos. I'll just say I was trying for coy.

Oh and thank you so much Modcloth and Candy Magazine for the features! I really, really am so honored and grateful for them. And to all of you for reading this lil ol' blog. Thank you!

B wears thrifted quilted jacket and boots, Bangkok shorts, Greenhills tanktop and Topshop wallet.
